How to Build Habits Without Overwhelm: A Simple Approach to Lasting Change

Are you ready to create habits that align with your personal growth journey—but find yourself overwhelmed by the pressure of “doing it all”? Whether it’s meditation, journaling, or working out, it can feel like the expectations pile up, leaving you drained instead of energized.

As someone who’s navigated life transitions while reconnecting with my authentic self, I know how challenging it can be to balance self-care with real-life demands. That’s why I’m sharing my proven, simplified approach to building habits that stick—especially for queer individuals and allies ready to align their self-concept with their daily actions.

Step 1: Focus on One Goal at a Time

When I was stuck in anxiety and depression, I wanted to do everything at once. Journaling, gratitude lists, workouts—it was overwhelming. That’s when I realized the key was to start small.

I chose one goal to focus on for the week. For me, it was movement. Instead of trying to nail a perfect routine right away, I shifted my focus to simply showing up in small, intentional ways.

Step 2: Create Energy Tiers for Your Goals

One-size-fits-all routines rarely work, especially when you’re navigating big changes or fluctuating energy levels (hello, life after 35). That’s why I recommend breaking your goals into low, medium, and high energy tiers.

For example, with movement:

  • Low Energy Tier: 15 minutes on the Peloton or a short walk.

  • Medium Energy Tier: A 30-minute app workout or gym class.

  • High Energy Tier: A full workout at the gym, complete with a treat after (I’m a sucker for a good smoothie).

This flexible approach ensures you always have a win, no matter how you feel that day. It’s about progress, not perfection.

Step 3: Build Momentum with Small Wins

When you commit to manageable steps, like 15 minutes a day, you’re not just creating a habit—you’re building momentum. Small wins stack up, giving you the confidence and energy to keep going. Before long, those 15-minute sessions might turn into 30, and you’ll have built a routine that works with your lifestyle, not against it.

Why This Works for Queer Individuals Navigating Big Life Transitions

As a queer style expert who works with individuals navigating major life changes, I’ve seen firsthand how creating aligned habits can transform not just your day-to-day life but also your sense of self. Whether it’s building routines that honor your energy or aligning your style with your current identity, this process is about reclaiming what feels right for you.

Your Turn: Start Small and Align Your Habits

What’s one habit you’d love to build this week? Try creating your own energy tiers:

  • Low Energy: The smallest, easiest step you can take (think: 5 pushups or 5 minutes of journaling).

  • Medium Energy: Your go-to action that feels doable on a regular day.

  • High Energy: The version you tackle when you’re feeling your best.

By meeting yourself where you are, you’ll create habits that empower you to show up authentically—without the overwhelm.
